A reverberatory furnace is a metallurgical furnace that heats materials using flames and radiant heat transfer from the furnace roof and walls. Its core application is in processing non-ferrous metals, particularly copper smelting and refining.

Non-ferrous Metal Smelting and Refining

The most widespread application of reverberatory furnaces is in processing non-ferrous metals such as copper, nickel, and tin.

Copper Smelting and Refining: In copper production, reverberatory furnaces are used both to smelt matte from concentrates and to refine blister copper and recycled copper. They can handle fine-grained flotation concentrates and are highly adaptable to various raw materials. During refining, impurities are removed through oxidation and reduction stages, ultimately casting the resulting anode plates.

Other Metal Processing: It is also used to melt aluminum, magnesium, zinc alloys, and copper, as well as to process tin-rich slag for the reduction smelting of tin-lead alloys.

Material Handling and Roasting

Besides metal smelting, reverberatory furnaces are also commonly used in the metallurgical and chemical industries as roasting equipment for drying, roasting, or slag treatment of materials.

Traditional reverberatory furnaces are simple in structure and require low investment, but they have low thermal efficiency, with a high proportion of heat being carried away by the flue gas. To overcome these drawbacks, modern reverberatory furnace technology is constantly being improved. For example, the tilting reverberatory furnace has been developed, which combines the advantages of convenient feeding in a fixed furnace and the rotatable furnace body of a rotary furnace, facilitating the processing of scrap copper. Simultaneously, by adding a regenerator to recover waste heat from the flue gas and preheat the combustion air, energy consumption can also be effectively reduced.

In summary, the reverberatory furnace is a widely used but energy-intensive traditional metallurgical equipment, mainly used for the pyrometallurgical smelting and refining of non-ferrous metals.
