The core application of flash furnaces is the intensive smelting of powdered sulfide concentrates, primarily used in the matte smelting of copper and nickel. It is a key piece of equipment in modern non-ferrous metallurgical industries for producing blister copper and nickel matte.
Its main applications are as follows:
The primary application is the matte smelting of copper and nickel sulfide ores. Dried fine-grained concentrate is injected into the reaction tower along with oxygen-enriched air, where oxidation, melting, and slag formation reactions are completed instantaneously in a suspended state, producing copper or nickel matte and slag. Currently, a significant proportion of the world’s blister copper is produced using flash smelting technology, and this method is widely adopted by large copper smelters.
Secondly, it has the capability to process other materials. Besides copper and nickel, flash furnaces are also used industrially or experimentally to process lead sulfide concentrates and to produce elemental sulfur from iron sulfide concentrates. Furthermore, there are processes attempting to convert pretreated laterite nickel ore into sulfide concentrates before feeding it into flash furnaces for smelting.
The outstanding advantages of this equipment are its high efficiency and self-heating. It utilizes the enormous specific surface area of finely ground materials, enabling the reaction to be completed within seconds, resulting in extremely high productivity. Simultaneously, the exothermic oxidation of sulfur and iron in the concentrate sustains the smelting process, achieving self-heating or semi-self-heating smelting and significantly reducing energy consumption. The high concentration of sulfur dioxide in the flue gas produced facilitates its recovery for acid production, resulting in significant environmental benefits.
However, flash furnaces also have certain limitations. Their slag contains a relatively high content of main metals, typically requiring subsequent processing such as a depletion furnace to recover valuable metals. Overall, flash furnaces, with their intensified smelting characteristics, occupy an irreplaceable position in copper-nickel pyrometallurgical processes.
